FLA wins ALA advocacy award

The American Library Association announced this week that FLA has been selected as the first recipient of ALA's new Presidential Award for Advocacy. The award is sponsored by the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF).

The award is for FLA's successful efforts in saving State Aid funding for public libraries in 2009. Award details are at

The fight to save State Aid would not have been won without the hard work of the entire library community. Everyone who helped deserves a pat on the back! With the current state budget, library funding will again be an issue in 2010. Please support FLA's advocacy efforts through your gifts to the "Friends of Florida Libraries" Honor Roll. See details at

Together we know we can make a difference!

Here are members of the Citrus County Friends sorting books. Love those bright yellow shirts! Share photos of your group in action, too.

Welcome, Friends!

This is the Florida Library Association’s newest blog, “Florida Friends” and it’s especially for Friends of Library groups in Florida.

The purpose of this blog is to give you a place to share news about your Friends of the Library group. We want to hear about your exciting programs. Tell us about your fundraising projects. Share your frustrations. Brag about the great things you’re doing.

In addition to connecting online, plan to join folks from other Friends of Library groups for in-person regional workshops in November 2008 and January 2009. These workshops are sponsored by the Friends, Foundations & Boards (FF&B) member group of the Florida Library Association. More information will be coming soon. Meanwhile, hold these dates:
Monday, November 3, 2008 – Lake City, Columbia County Public Library

Wednesday, November 5, 2008– Largo, Largo Public Library

Thursday, January 15, 2009 – Coconut Creek, Broward North Regional/BCC Library

Friday, January 16, 2009 – Estero, Lee South County Regional Library

The Florida Library Association is indebted to Diana Sachs-Silviera ad the Tampa Bay Library Consortium for creating this blog for our use.
